Phylis Tickle “Emergence Christianity” The main thesis of the book is very centered on the shifts in Christianity, but her words ring true of what society as a whole is experiencing: society is being “ characterized by a shift from institutionalized life to a more fluid, decentralized, and experiential form of life.” It’s driven by several factors: the “ decline of institutional authority, the rise of individualism, and the growing diversity of our society”.

It doesn’t have to be a fearful transition…it can be an exciting and invigorating time.

Christyna, you are doing such important work…I love that there are educators like you influencing those who will eventually be the ones leading these organizations.

I really appreciate this tip, i.e., ask for what you need — even upon an exit!

Yes, it’s hard in those moments to believe there’s latitude for requests. But there is.

I wonder if some of it is that if I show you that I’m upset that I have to let you go, opens a door to some ‘legal retaliation’. If I give any hint that I’m not sure this is right…than they may come back with some legal action.

Agree. Fear is such a blocker in these interactions. There’s no lion or apex predator attending these calls. But everyone seems to be operating in maximum fear mode and it shortchanges us. We, esp people teams, can totally evolve beyond this primitive fear to unlock a different tone in these conversations.

Disruption to connections! Dang…so true.

That was such a helpful insight to gain, T. Layoffs are extremely detrimental to human connection, relationships, and ties. And we need to be more cognizant of that! And as you said, Tony, we need to be kinder!

OMG yes. Where’s THAT startup? The one that optimizes layoffs as a wellness perk, and disrupts this trend of layoffs as a destabilizing, demoralizing separation

Such an important statement here! How might we treat layoffs as an opportunity for growth on all sides!

As long as we are a Capitalistic society, we will never get away from layoffs. Warren Buffet speaks of the 2 sides of capitalism. “The system creates an ever-growing pile of losers while concurrently delivering a gusher of improved goods and services.”

Wow. That’s a sobering quote. Feels unsustainable. Which also explains these disruptive boom/bust cycles to correct the damage

The place of agency we have…it’s in HOW we approach layoffs.

This was my first three way recording using OBS software to record, so no worries. You and Tony served as both speakers and test subjects lol
I’m using the captions and that helps too
